On the road to Chota Tingrai Tea Estate, Avantika and I cross a dump. It’s a rather disgusting place – full of plastic bags splattered with curry and achar, old newspapers, and rotting pp bags. There is always smoke rising from the immortal plastic fire that smolders within the ever-growing heap’s bowels. It’s also a haunt for local cows. Before visiting India, I didn’t realize how much cows like to eat garbage. But they do.
Avantika and I detest this dump with its piled dried slurry and occasional hog. Avantika has tried for the last five years to figure out a waste-to-energy project or new collection system for the local government to take up so they can get rid of this eye and scent sore. However, she has not had any success in even slowing the growth of the pile.
Our shared detest of waste coupled with this regular reminder of the perils of plastic has led Avantika and me to search out waste reducing projects and products.
In many ways, organic agriculture harvests what can be considered waste. We make compost from dried leaves and cow dung – both of which would have been burned otherwise. We collect weeds from the tea garden to make herbal sprays that reduce pest attacks. We even feed our kitchen waste to our cows. (FYI – we don’t let our cows eat plastic bags. We love our cows. My cow’s name is Garfield).
